South West Mounties Magic Win Grand Final in Their First Ever Season
13 August 2024
The first ever South West Mounties MAGIC netball team won the grand final of the PROVIDOOR Premier League on Sunday, making history as one of the first teams to top the ladder in their inaugural season of this league.
In a landslide victory where MAGIC were in front the entire game, the champions won the grand final 59 to 52 against the minor league premiers in their inaugural season, in front of a loud and cheering crowd of South West Sydney supporters at the Ken Rosewall Arena.
Led by captain Jamie Hume and Head Coach Virginia Welsh, the South West Mounties MAGIC win exceeded all expectations, with the team only meeting each other for the first time six months ago.
Forged in partnership between Mounties Group and Liverpool Netball Association, the South West Mounties MAGIC team hit the professional court for the first time six months ago, establishing a new offering for elite sports within Mounties Group. MAGIC is the newest team to join the Premier League competition this year, led by Captain Jamie Hume and Head Coach Virginia Welsh.
Noticing a clear gap of Premier League netball franchises in South West Sydney, the introduction of the MAGIC team by Mounties Group and Liverpool Netball Association brought elite netball to the region, reflecting the growth of interest in the sport, now played by over 1 million Australians.
Mounties Group CEO Dale Hunt said the team provides equal access and a pathway to professional sport while ensuring no adverse financial implications on grassroots sports in the area:
“We are absolutely over the moon for the South West Mounties MAGIC team on their grand final win! To top the premier league is an amazing feat, but to do so in your inaugural season is even more impressive, and demonstrates the pure talent of young sportspeople in the South West Region.”
“The decision to partner with Liverpool Netball Association was an easy one. For decades, Mounties Group has supported cultural and sporting initiatives in the communities we operate in. The creation of South West Mounties MAGIC is reflective of our commitment to serving our members, who choose to spend their time and money with us, as a community.”
Captain Jamie Hume thanks Mounties Care and her team culture after the game, saying: “To Mounties Care, Dale [Hunt, CEO] and Arely Carrion [Head of Community], your generosity and determination this year to make this club the best it can be is incredible. With your support, no stone has gone unturned to get us to where we are.”
The Netball NSW Premier League is a flagship high performance competition that has served as the breeding ground for many GWS Giants and NSW Swifts netball players, state coaches and national officials in their early careers.
Rebecca Wakefield, director at South West Mounties MAGIC and President at Liverpool City Netball Association, hopes the team’s win will inspire the next generation to take up the sport:
“When we partnered with Mounties Group last year, we knew it was an incredible opportunity not just for our own Association, but for the sport of netball within the South West region."
“Having access to Mounties Group’s 224,000 plus members through our partnership is game-changing for the sport. We are certain that South West Mounties MAGIC’s monumental win has produced clear role models for the future generation to look up to within the sport. After all, you can’t be it if you can’t see it!"
